Well, hello there!
My name is JoAnna, and I am a full-time freelance writer and expat currently living in Kyiv, Ukraine.
I’m also a returned Peace Corps volunteer, yoga instructor, and international election observer with a love for the great outdoors, snail mail, passport stamps, creating collages, listening to dub step, hiking and backpacking, reading too many books at a time, venturing in to most things adventure-related, and living every day to its fullest. An avid traveler who has snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef, whitewater rafted the Nile River, tipped back moonshine in the Cook Islands, and hiked the John Muir, Inca, and Alpe Adria Trails, I also appreciate moments of serenity, which often involve a good glass of wine.
My husband and I are currently expatriates living in Kyiv, but for the nine years before that, we lived an exciting life in Las Vegas, replete with spectacular food, flash, and fun. Now we’re learning Russian, shopping at the market for fresh produce, and taking advantage of our location to travel throughout Europe.
I am also a proud host mom to high school foreign exchange students (most of whom are no longer teenagers). Together, my husband and I have created an awesome, eclectic, unconventional, and growing global family that includes girls from Slovakia, Finland, Germany, and Norway, boys from Denmark and Germany, and two honorary students from Denmark and Germany. Over the years, we’ve also had a small zoo of rescue pets.
I originally created Kaleidoscopic Wandering to share my travel stories and tips, but times have changed. My life if now a crazy mix of travel and expat adventures, writing and work, family and fun … and this blog reflects that vibe. It is an insider’s look at my family’s day-to-day life, regardless of where in the world we might be at the moment.
Cast of Characters
My favorite travel companion is my husband, Cory, and you’ll meet him throughout this blog. He’s an English and theater middle and high school teacher, a bonafide geek, and one hell of a cook. Whenever I’m up to my elbows in something food- or wine-related, he’s always by my side.
If you happen to run across a post about our foreign exchange students, you’ll know them by the following initials: A, M, C, S, A2, B, L, and N. While they’re splashed all over social media, it’s not my place to broadcast their names affiliated with photos.

Get in Touch
This site a little bit about business but a lot about having fun. It is an online collection of things my family and I experience and love. Feel free to get in touch with us about anything relevant, but please don’t send spammy emails or junk. That’s just annoying.
If you’re looking for more information on my professional work and whether I’m available to take on new projects, I encourage you to wander over to my portfolio for more information.
