What is it about this time of year that turns everyday living into a life in fast forward? I can’t believe it’s almost November. Despite the fact that Las Vegas isn’t necessarily teeming with the rich-hued foliage that so many other destinations enjoy, I can tell it’s finally fall because we’ve turned off the air conditioning and have the windows open for fresh air.
I love hunkering down in the blankets at night because it’s just a bit too cold for me. I appreciate being able to sit outside with a cup of coffee while brainstorming with pen and paper, my dog Walden playing with his ball by my feet. Even though this time of year goes too fast, I feel like it’s also a time when I can slow down just a touch, start to reflect on the past year (and think about the upcoming year) and enjoy these days we can spend outdoors before diving into the holiday season madness.
Here are a few things that have caught my attention this month:
- I always enjoyed school and learning new things, but there’s no way I can justify going back to get another degree – especially because I have no idea what I’d study! So I’ve been taking online courses at edX (most recently, classes on the science of happiness and creative entrepreneurship). I also like the website Open Culture, which catalogs free educational offerings from libraries, archives and other MOOC-curated programs.
- The very first app I ever put on my iPhone is still my favorite one. Hipstamatic is a photo app I use to take aged photos like the one above, but what I love most about it is its random shake feature, which means I never know exactly what my pictures will look like when I take them. A little photo roulette, if you will.
- Not too very long ago, Netflix finally released The Wonder Years in its entirety. My whole family used to watch this show when I was a kid, and I’ve wanted to watch it all again but its taken an eternity to get all the music rights so that it could be released on DVD. Now, Cory and I are savoring the show, watching one episode at a time without any other preoccupations.
- I’m not really into movies, but I’m actually pretty excited to see The Peanuts Movie, which is coming out on November 6. In the meantime, I’m getting my Peanuts fix with the Snoopygrams account on Instagram.
