What to Pack for a Trip to the CaribbeanWhether you’re planning on sampling the culinary delights of Puerto Rico, hitting up the beaches in Jamaica, hiking in the U.S. Virgin Islands or exploring any other of the many Caribbean islands, there are a few things you should always take with you. Whether you’ll be within a short flight of South America (such is the case in Curaçao) or are as close as the Bahamas, don’t leave home without these items:

Sunscreen

The sun in the Caribbean is brutal, so apply sunscreen frequently and in copious quantities. Chances are you’ll spend a fair amount of time waterside, so make sure you choose a brand that is waterproof and sweatproof. If you dip into the water, reapply when you get out, and if you’ve been outside for any length of time, don’t hesitate to slather on a little more sunscreen. Even with the heavy applications, chances are you’ll still go home with some sort of sun.

A sarong

Whether you’re a guy or a girl, packing a sarong can serve so many different purposes. Wrap it around as a beach cover-up, use it to dry off when you don’t have a towel handy or throw it over your shoulders if you need to protect your skin after a swim. Sarongs are small and easy to stuff into a day bag, so take one with you whenever you leave for the day.

Conch: Its Whats For DinnerI’ve always known conch as those pretty pink and peach shells that decorate my grandmother’s home in Florida. It turns out that they aren’t just good for decoration, though. In the Caribbean, conch is served up in just about any way imaginable and plays a delicious part in many meals.

On Grand Turk, I had the chance to visit a conch farm, where conch are actually raised and bred for food. They start out as itty-bitty microscopic bits that can live to be a whopping 20 years in captivity. The larger conchs are heavy and huge, with equally heavy and huge reproductive organs that aren’t so attractive considering the very raw nature of the animal.

Raw is actually one of the ways people enjoy eating conch. I haven’t had a chance to try it in that form, but I can tell you that every other tidbit of conch I’ve tossed in my mouth has been delicious.

On my recent cruise to the Caribbean, we spent one day on Grand Turk, one of the 40 Turks and Caicos Islands. Grand Turk is only seven miles across, and approximately 5,600 live there. It was devastated by a hurricane in 2008, and the island is still working hard to recover from the destruction of the storm. We took an auto tour of the island, and the movement of the vehicle coupled with the rain did not make for many good pictures of the buildings and landmarks on Grand Turk.

Nonetheless, I did get a few decent photographs despite the crummy weather.
