One of the things I most enjoy about traveling is talking about it. In this new weekly series, I’d like to pose some of the questions I’ve discussed with friends, family and fellow travelers over the years. I invite you to pull up your backpack, grab a handful of the local snack food and chime in with your comments and thoughts. Feel free to respond to others, but remember to play nice!
Here’s a Question for You:
What one trip would you most like to take in your lifetime?
It’s so hard just to pick one, isn’t it? I want to bike around Ireland, stay in eco-lodges in Central America, take a safari in Africa, be adventurous in New Zealand, visit the historic sites of Europe and ride the train across Canada. But if I had to take only one trip, it would have to be truly epic. That trip would be traversing the Silk Road. I have absolutely no idea how I would do this, but I imagine it would be a complicated trip involving trains, buses and foot that would span several countries over the course of several months. Ever since I heard the music of the Silk Road at the Silk Road Festival in Washington D.C. the summer of 2001, I have been inspired to explore it for myself.

If I could only take one trip for the rest of my life, I’d probably cheat and take a round the world trip so I could hit all the places on my bucket list.

Nice way to cheat Gray. I like this.
But really if I could choose one place to go it would have to be Morocco. I’ve been fascinated with the country since I was a kid.

It is sort of cheating, isn’t it, Alouise?
Just kidding!
For sake of argument, though, Gray, are there one or two places that you absolutely know you’d add to that trip itinerary?
Good call about Morocco, Alouise. That is very, very high on my bucket list. One of my best friends went for three weeks last year and absolutely loved it. I can’t wait to go myself some day.

You’re not going to let me get away with that? LOL. Dang. All right, if it could just be one trip, I’d make it Egypt to see the pyramids. I have long wanted to do that.

Oh — only one trip — that’s way too hard. But, right now, my choice would be traveling through Europe with our dogs because traveling in Europe has always been a dream of ours and traveling with our dogs has also been a dream. Luckily, we get to do this next year so it might be cheating a bit!

I love that your dream trip is coming true, Akila! Where are you planning to go in Europe?

I used to live in Sydney, Australia and have always wanted to do a road trip all over the entire country!

A road trip across Australia would truly be epic. Have you read One for the Road? You might like it. I wrote a review of the book here: http://kaleidoscopicwandering.com/2010/02/04/reading-one-for-the-road/

I would love to spend a couple of months bicycling through the south of France and Italy — one of my favorite regions — and spend a little time exploring the vineyards and small towns I pass through. It’s on my bucket list.

That sounds so relaxing and beautiful, Trisha. Mmmm … vineyards and fresh air in France and Italy. Yes, I think I could handle that!

An African safari. One than spanned a few weeks and a few different countries. It’s long been on my bucket list.

A long safari would be amazing! I saw four of the big five when I lived in Kenya, but I never did make it on a safari. That’s been on my bucket list for a long time too.

Oh how I would love to do the silk road as well!

Do you know of any good resources to make a Silk Road adventure a reality?

My favourite travel book is the not so well known “Who Needs a Road?” by Harold Stephens and Albert Podell. In essence, it’s about two men who drive around the world in the 1960’s and have adventures so great I still can’t believe nobody has turned it into a movie. They go through areas that are simply not possible now — like Iraq — and have what I consider one of the greatest modern day adventures. The closest description today would be a Trans-World Expedition that mixes Ewan MacGregor’s Long Way Round with Land Rovers through Africa and unlimited time.
Alas that type of trip isn’t realistic anymore, so I would go with a more realistic Arctic Ocean to Antarctica trip from Alaska to Tierra Del Fuego by vehicle. Dream trip.

Wow! A trip from the Arctic Ocean to Antarctica would definitely be ambitious!
Thanks for the book recommendation. I’ll have to look it up.

One of my life’s goals is to go to Slovenia. People usually look at me like I am crazy when I say that, but I have an absolute fascination with that country. Someday I will get off North America and finally make my way over there.

I would love to visit Slovenia. No weird looks from me!

While I enjoy getting out of the country, and Ireland and Norway are high on my list, I was really inspired/fascinated by Winslow, AZ when we were there. I think there are a lot of little boom towns like Winslow along Route 66. I’d really like to drive Route 66 and visit those sleepy little towns.

JoAnna
Ahhh … the Route 66 dream. Someday we’ll do it. I promise.

If I could take only one trip, it would be a major jaunt through Africa. I’m dying to see Morocco, take a Nile cruise through Egypt, and then road trip down to South Africa! It might take me a while, but it’s a continent that really fascinates me and that I’m dying to explore.
January 18, 2011 at 1:21 pm
JoAnna
Africa is apparently a popular bucket list destination. I love the idea of taking a cruise down the Nile River. I have white water rafted on it before, and that was terrifying, but something a bit calmer would be a lot of fun!

wow, there have been some really great ideas here and i could easly usurp some of them for myself, but one place i’ve always wanted to go was to the new countries of the previous soviet union and top it off with a trip to st. petersburg. solvenia, estonia, ukraine, lithuania, etc, etc, etc.…i think these countries could still be afforable and not as highly traveled.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Estonia myself. Great choice of destinations!

Cherie @Technomadia
Gosh.. it’s really really difficult for me to get into a mindset of imaging the scenario in which I could only choose one trip. Fatal diagnosis and limited funds, perhaps? Impending end of the world? Disruption in oil distribution that shuts down most transportation methods?
Hmm. I also have trouble visualizing what exactly constitutes a ‘trip’ — as I’ve been a full time traveler with no home base for 4 years now. What designates a start & stop when there’s no ‘return home’? Someone asked me today how many trips we’ve taken in our nomadic time, and I just couldn’t answer. One? Hundreds?
That said, I do have specific adventures on my list. So if my travel life as I know it were to end for some unimaginable reason, and I could only do one last adventure… I’d probably head for Nepal. It was the first destination to fascinate me enough to start an adventure list when I was in high school, and it would make sense to make sure it’s checked off
January 19, 2011 at 3:05 pm
JoAnna
I love it when you participate in these conversations, Cherie. Your insights are always so different and fascinating than those who don’t live a nomadic life. Nepal is a fascinating choice, though. I’d love to see your home make it up those mountains!
